Griffin's New E.I.

Griffin has a new Early Interventionist and she is fantastic! Her name is Ms. A and he responds really well to her. Ms. A is bi-lingual which comes in quite handy because lately Griffin has been most interested in Spanish and it just so happens that is what her specialty is. They worked with numbers to twenty in Spanish, flash cards, and other everyday objects and he did quite well saying the Spanish words each and every time with great enthusiasm.

Griffin has been playing his educational computer games quite a bit lately instead of watching TV and this thrills me to no end because he has learned so much from them. I just love to hear him laugh and repeat what the games say like, "I knew that you could do it. Great job!" He doesn't seem to be doing it in a scripting sort of way, he is just repeating it in context each time they say it in the game but not when the game is not on. So I don't think that he is scripting.

That's about it there's nothing more to write about mostly because I can't think of anything not necessarily because nothing has happened. I guess that you could say that I have writer's block rather than there's not a thing going on in our lives. I hope that you all are doing very well and leave a comment for me if you will about whether or not your child using scripting.

How interesting that Griffin is learning Spanish, because Henry has been learning it also in school! I couldn't believe it the first time they wrote in his notebook "Henry went to Spanish class today with the other 1st graders." But they say that he is picking it up really well.

Henry does a fair share of scripting from his favorite movies and books. Another thing he does, though, and I'm not quite sure what to call it, is he says something and then wants us to repeat it back. He will keep saying it until we repeat- like today we saw "Meet the Robinsons". At first he was so excited that he kept saying "We're seeing Meet the Robinsons!" He would repeat it over and over until one of us said it back to him and then he would relax.

Hope you have a nice weekend.

Great to hear about Griffin's progress! I'm also thrilled to hear that you have found someone who seems to click with Griffin. So important, in my opinion!

Conor still scripts from time to time. Just like Henry, he'll say something over and over ("Look at that black truck! Look at that black truck!") until you say something like, "Yes, you're right! I DID see that black truck."
Like Griffin, he does a lot of repeating of his games. He especially loves his Leapfrog Math Desk. It says, "You can do it!" to him and he LOVES that one. I think he likes the way it sounds! And, he learned "Great job!" from those games, too.
I actually don't mind the tv so much because Conor has essentially learned how to role play and engage in pretend play by watching certain shows. His new favorite is The Backyardigans. He is Austin, he calls me Uniqua, and Daddy is Tyrone. LOL

I didn't realize that my blogglines must have dropped you when you made the switch to the new blogger. Oh well, I will read back and catch up.

So glad to hear that Griffin is doing well! I am happy to hear that you are too. I bet the nice weather helps. We are heading down to South Carolina today for the week. Hope we have nice weather.

That is neat that Griffin is into learning the Spanish. It is obvious he is one smart little guy!

Charlie still used scripting, but he applies it to things in such a way that we know where it came from, but outsiders tend to think it is just regular talk. Like when he said, "Way to go!" We know that's from Bob the Builder, but at least he's talking.

Did you see the cnn video about the woman who uses a shocker device on her 40 year old autistic son? She says it really helps him. I would like to tell her to put it right up her...

Unbelievable what people will do.

Hi Lora-I sent you an email about two days ago-I hope that you got it. My email was at its limit as I never delete things and a few people have told me that they have not heard from me in a while when I sent then emails. Let me know and I can re-send it. Glad Griffin is doing so well.we are on spring break here and the weather is great. Just an FYI-all kids script. they just tend to move through it more quickly than kids on the spectrum. He is just exploring with words-so cool for him. My oldest scripted a lot-and his language is fine now. Just be happy that he IS indeed using words. That is a great thing as you well know.

what gretchen said is interesting because fluffy does a similar thing. he'll often repeat something over and over until we say it and then he relaxes. it's like he NEEDS to hear it from us for him to know it was said.

he doesn't script but his talking is very perseverative at times, especially lately. lots of circular chatter, monologues really, about certain things like the camera settings or his computer something over other or numbers. lots of talk of numbers. it feels like a combination of habit, genuine interest, and lots of CONTROL stuff.

so glad griffin loves Ms. A! how fun to be learning spanish!
